Inspired by vintage cars, boat hulls, and the iconic Airstream trailer, the Air Range by deVOL is a contemporary kitchen system featuring curved oak frames, push-to-open Hi-Mac solid surface doors and drawers, and riveted aluminum end panels. DeVOL designs and builds the Air Range in Great Britain of both traditional and modern materials.
The manufacturer’s process of laminating curved oak for the cabinets gives them a rigid, stable curve to support the solid surface doors made from recycled aluminum ore and acrylic resin. The doors, along with the cabinet drawers, open by pushing a dimple set in the door. Rolled aluminum is riveted to oak frames in a method used to construct the frame of the Airstream. Air’s aluminum panels are annealed to make them more pliable and then rolled by hand by deVOL’s carpenters, since the team found that industrial fabricators could not match the 1mm tolerance required for a perfect fit. White Silestone, Carrara marble, honed black granite, and limed oak worktops top it all off.
To demonstrate their craftsmanship during the 100% Design expo, DeVOL workshop manager Ben Creed set up a temporary workshop where he made a bench inspired by the components of the Air Kitchen.
